GRADY HOWELL knows the exact date when he became a historian.
“It was July 3, 1955. I was eight years old, and it was the first time I’d seen Vicksburg,” Howell says.
“Before that day, I was a cowboy.
“But we were driving through Vicksburg in our ‘48 Chevy, and we saw the cannons and the trench lines [from the Civil War], and something clicked,” he says.
Howell, a Biloxi native, spent the rest of his life pursuing and learning from history.
