Low pay and rigorous standards contribute to police shortage
A class of about 40 police recruits is expected to begin training this month at the Jackson Police Training Academy. However Jackson will still be well short of their targeted goal of 525 officers.
Of those in the recruit class, a handful will likely drop out because of the program’s physical requirements. Some will finish the 12-week course and never report for duty. These are just a couple of reasons for the shortfall.
The city today has 425 officers, 100 short of the 525 budgeted for the fiscal year.
