Yandell Road intersection

The Yandell Road and U.S. Highway 51 intersection will soon receive improvements.

Improvements include widening the intersection’s east approach to provide a 500-foot left turn lane and a 200-foot right turn lane, installing an emergency signal, and upgrading signal detection equipment and timing plans.

During the March 6 Madison County Board of Supervisors meeting, County Engineer Dan Gaillet made a recommendation for the board to approve Southern Rock’s bid for construction of the project.

The project was recommended in a traffic study done by Neel-Schaffer and included making improvements on Yandell Road basically from Highway 51 back to the east, according to Gaillet. “We did that project’s bids a couple of weeks ago. Southern Rock won the bid on that project for $849,955.70.”

Construction might also include running a paved shoulder “if cost feasible.” Gaillet added that the project’s construction cost is below the original estimate.

Gaillet also recommended Stantec engineering manage the project’s construction for a cost of $97,150.58.

The board unanimously approved both recommendations.

The study, completed by Neel-Schaffer for the county in 2016, can be found at www.madison-co.com.
