Myrt Majure

Myrt Majure, beloved mother of Janie Peet Thompson, Thea (Susu) Majure, both of Los Angeles, Jenny Markow (son-in-law Pete), grandmother of John Peet of Vail Valley, Colorado, Mark (Michele) Markow, Majure (Amanda) Markow, and great-grandmother of John, Elizabeth, and Manning Markow, sister and lifelong best friend of Janie Gore of Clinton, and aunt to many nieces and nephews, died peacefully Wednesday March 8, at Baptist Hospital.  Myrt was affectionately known and loved as “Tut” by her family and many friends of the family.

Myrt was born January 22, 1925, in Newton,  daughter of “Dear Mother and Dear Daddy,” the late Myrtle and Phillip James. Myrt’s high school sweetheart Toby left for WWII and Myrt pursued her passion for music at Blue Mountain College. Upon Toby’s return in 1945, Myrt and Toby married and began their life together in Oxford.  Following Toby’s graduation from Ole Miss they lived in Tupelo, before making Jackson their home in 1960.  Their love of the Lord and dedication to service led them to First Baptist Church Jackson, where she was a member of the choir for many years. 

Myrt loved the game of golf.  She played for many years and ultimately became chairman of the rules committee for the Southern Women’s Golf Association. She passed her love of the game on to her three grandsons while teaching them all to play. In addition to golf, she enjoyed the game of bridge, playing with her friends at the Country Club of Jackson and Jackson Bridge House up until days before her passing.

A celebration of Myrt’s wonderful life was held  March 13 at First Baptist Church Jackson.
